"I had a great time fishing and hanging out with you in Patagonia. You did a great job working the rivers for us during otherwise challenging late season conditions."

/// Uli, San Francisco, USA

"It´s been a stunning first day in these exotic climes. I released a half dozen small rainbows on a 5 wt. using dry fly/indicator rigs. I also let a brown trout around 4 lbs. get the best of me by spitting my barbless fly before I was able to come tight."

"Thank you for an outstanding day of fishing while floating the Chimehuin River. It was one of my best days ever, with about 20 fish caught, most of them good fighters. The prize was the 20+ inch long brown trout, our last fish of the day, after I finally got the hang of stripping line. Your lunch was excellent, and your companionship added a lot to the day. We look forward to returning to Argentina and having more days on the river with you in the future."

/// Dick C.

"I had a great time fishing with Alejandro. He is enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and he picked and organised our stay at absolutely the right place for the fishing part of our trip to Argentina. I fished and my lovely lady enjoyed life on the Estancia - and was even persauded to fish on our last day. And the fish on the Collon Cura and its branches, are a tough bunch coming to the net reluctantly to say the least. I hope I can get back for a repeat performance."

/// Marcus Wide, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

“After five days of fishing together, we now consider Alejandro an honored friend and look forward to many future trips together. Alejandro is a serious and professional fly fisherman and guide but is also a lot of fun to be around. We consider him among the elite, you could not ask for a better guide”

/// James, California.

“I had an idyllic fishing day on the Malleo River with Alejandro. Eventhough my limited experience with trout fishing, his guidance resulted in a fine catch! He imparted his knowledge and explained things very clearly to me”

 /// Megg Gregg, Ireland.

“We had never been fly fishing before, and Alejandro was an excellent teacher (including helping us to catch several rainbow trout!). The impromptu wine, cheese and salami lunch on the side of the river afterwards was very much appreciated as well! We definitely look forward to returning”

/// N and C Smith, London.

“We had the best dry fly experience in Malleo River. Tons of bites and unbelievable hatch!”

/// Alastair and Sandy, USA.

“The best trout fishing we've ever done! Patagonia rocks!”

/// Bill, San Francisco.

“Spent three days on the river! Great campsites; very comfortable and excellent food. Inch worm time is a unique experience!”

/// Heather and Will, Canada.

Thoughts from a guest “Like so many springtimes before, I spent a good part of this November in Patagonia, fly-fishing and eating empanadas and asados by the rivers of the Lake District. I was lucky enough to live in this part of the world, once upon a time long ago, and my love for Patagonia, and especially for fly-fishing, have never left me. There is something peaceful and soulful about the Patagonian Andes, and it really is no wonder that it has won over so many outdoor enthusiasts.

I traveled to San Martín de los Andes, at the foothills of the Chapelco Ski Resort and on the northern shore of Lake Lacar, a city surrounded by mountains, woods, rivers and pristine lakes. Together with the city of Junín de los Andes, which is about 40 miles from San Martín, they span the great network of rivers and lakes that have made this region so famous for its fly-fishing.

My stay took place at an out-of-town Estancia, a private ranch popular among fishermen. My friend Alejandro Buchanan, a long-time fly-fishing guide, joined me for the occasion - a huge boon since the guides here know the best spots along all the rivers and lakes.

We started early on the first day at Alejandro’s home stretch of river, warming up and working the rust out of my casting technique. Day two was spent wading the Malleo River where I caught my first rainbow trout of the season. By the time I started getting hungry an asado was beckoning at us from the riverside, which we accompanied with a glass or two of Malbec.

That same night we toured around San Martín de los Andes, a city with great shopping and surprisingly gourmet restaurant options. We opted for the empanadas at one of the local pubs.

On the next day, Alejandro planned a river float for us. We pushed off at one of the bends of the Aluminé River, and then floated, fished, waded and picnicked for the next 6 hours. Even without catching a fish, that is seriously the experience of a lifetime. Lucky for me, I caught several rainbow and brown trout (and I have the pictures to prove it).

If you’re a nature lover, and especially if you’re a fly-fisherman, there are few things which I would recommend more heartily than spending time in the Patagonian Andes. They hold a special place in my heart, and I won’t be the last person to tell you that”
